RDD 2026 in review

Among the trends that Venthoye noted was the dominance of biologics in the nasal pipeline, and Lonza‘s Kim Shepard discussed that topic in her talk on “Designing Nasal Powders for Biologics: Formulation, Process Design and Manufacturability Considerations.”

Shepard’s talk was in line with a continuing trend towards nasal powders. CDMO Hovione presented a workshop on “Innovative Strategies in Nasal Powder Drug Delivery: Device Design, Advanced Formulations, and Analytical Approaches” and announced the availability of a new single-use capsule-based intranasal delivery device designed in partnership with IDC.

In a session called “New Molecules Need New Methods,” Mark Parry of CDMO Intertek, which sponsors an annual forum on inhaled and nasal biologics and DNA, presented a talk on “Building Analytical Best Practices for Respiratory Biologics: Raiding the Biological and Respiratory Toolboxes” in which Parry noted that biologics now make up just over 50% of development pipelines.

Workshops focused on biologics included Lonza‘s workshop, also presented by Kim Shepard, which was titled, “Winning the Hand You’re Dealt: An Interactive Workshop on Developing Innovative Spray-dried Products” and included discussion of spray drying of biologics for nasal delivery as well as for oral inhalation. Aptar Pharma also presented a workshop titled “From Bench to Biologic: A Hands-On Journey to Creating a Dry Powder Inhaler or Nebulizer Product.”
