Hovione completes expansion of spray drying facilities in US and Ireland

CDMO Hovione has announced the completion of expansion projects at its facilities in East Windsor, NJ, USA and Ringaskiddy, Cork, Ireland that its says will provide a significant increase in the company’s spray drying capacity and will create more than 40 jobs. In November 2021, Hovione said that it was launching a $170 million project to increase capacity at its US, Irish, and Portuguese facilities by about 25%.

In 2021, the company said that a 31,000 sq ft building would be added at the New Jersey site. According to the new announcement, the recently completed New Jersey expansion “represents the first step of a multi-year site expansion program, aimed at advancing both spray drying and tableting capabilities.” The company also said that spray drying capacity at the Cork site has now almost doubled.

In addition to inhalation particle engineering and formulation development and spray drying services, Hovione offers a range of dry powder inhalers. In May 2023, the company announced that it had partnered with H&T Presspart on development of the Sunriser DPI platform; and later that year, Hovione announced that it would work with Industrial Design Consultancy (IDC) on development of two new dry powder intranasal delivery devices.

Hovione CEO Jean-Luc Herbeaux commented, “These expansions, incorporating our latest technologies, reflect Hovione’s unwavering commitment to innovation and manufacturing service excellence. Strengthening our facilities and teams in the USA and Ireland allows us to better serve our customers and provide flexible supply options for both small- and large-scale programs. By increasing our capacity and enhancing our technological capabilities, we are even better equipped to help our customers bring new and more complex drugs to market.”
