Abera gets approval for Phase 1 trial of its Ab-01.12 intranasal pneumococcal vaccine

The Dutch Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects has approved Abera Bioscience’s application for a Phase 1 clinical trial of its Ab-01.12 intranasal pneumococcal vaccine, the company said. According to Abera, the dose escalation study will take place at Radboud UMC and is expected to enroll as many as 25 healthy adults.

Abera Bioscience CEO Maria Alriksson commented, “This is a major milestone for Abera. After many years of dedicated work, we have now received approval for our first clinical trial, marking our transition into a clinical-stage company. This is an important validation of the quality of the work carried out by our team and collaborators. The opportunity to evaluate our technology in humans is a significant step forward, not only for Ab-01.12 but also for our broader vaccine platform and Abera’s continued development.”

In addition to the pneumococcal vaccine, Abera’s pipeline includes nasal vaccines against influenza and COVID-19 in pre-clinical development. In December 2024, the company announced a partnership with Orexo on development of intranasal dry powder vaccines based on Orexo’s powder engineering technology, beginning with the influenza vaccine.
