Harro Höfliger says that dry-filling technology for metered dose inhaler production, which has previously been available only at laboratory scale, is now available for commercial scale production lines. Dry filling, which Harro has developed in partnership with Pharmatec Solutions, minimizes handling of propellant by eliminating the usual step of mixing the API and propellant before filling the can and then placing the valve. Instead, the new technology involves adding the API directly into the canister and then adding propellant through the valve after crimping.
According to Harro, the new technology is meant to reduce the need for explosion protection when filling cans with LGWP propellants. In addition, the company says that the elimination of mixing vessels improves efficiency by eliminating the need to clean those vessels and by allowing for larger batch sizes.
Harro Höfliger Sales Director Kris Brosig tells OINDPnews that, “The news is that a proven dry-filling approach is now available as a fully engineered, scalable manufacturing solution for commercial MDI production. This provides the industry with a new alternative in a market where commercially available MDI filling solutions remain relatively limited.”
