DDL 2025 offered a look at innovation in OINDP development

On the MDI device side, CDMO Kindeva touted its experience from the previous MDI propellant transition with the slogan, “We pioneered the first sustainable inhaler. Now we’re perfecting the next” and Aptar Pharma promoted its Zen30 Futurity MDI valve, which is designed for use with both new propellants.

Other companies addressed the question of device sustainability separately from the question of MDI propellants. Device maker Emphasys Innovation, for example, promoted its EcoTwin DPI with the slogan “innovation driven by sustainability” and touted the metal-free device’s few components. Regent’s Leaf DPI is 100% recyclable and reusable for 12 months, the company says. Materials company Avient was promoting “bio-based polymer solutions for reduced carbon footprint,” offering plastics and additives made with oils derived from plants.

Opportunities for young researchers

David Morton and other speakers in the innovation session on the first day of the meeting emphasized the need for new researchers with open minds to drive inhaled and nasal drug delivery technology forward, and DDL 2025 offered several opportunities for students and early career researchers. As always, DDL provided free registration for students; opportunities to apply for career development grants; and the Pat Burnell Award competition. The DDL New Researchers Network also offered two events exclusively for early career researchers and PhD students, holding a networking lunch on the first day of the meeting and a career cocktail event with talks by Cathy Fromen and Pulmotree CEO Ulf Krüger.

In the exhibition, a brand new company aimed at training graduates for work in pharmaceutical companies launched on the first day of the meeting. Founded by Marie Pettit, The Bridge will offer a three-month “simulated pharmaceutical program” for recent science graduates who want to work in industry. In 2026, students will have the opportunity to select from one of two projects, one of which is formulation and analysis of a dry powder inhaler.

In addition to training in formulation science, the program is also designed to familiarize students with ICH guidelines, regulatory requirements, documentation, and other related skills necessary for succession as an OINDP industry professional. According to Pettit, both young researchers and representatives from companies attending DDL expressed interest in the program.
