3P innovation has announced that it is now offering new filling technology in its custom-built DPI filling systems that is based on equipment originally patented by GSK for high-speed filling of Diskus dry powder inhalers. The company notes that its founder, Tom Bailey, led development of filling technology for the original Diskus filling system which later was used also in filling of Ellipta DPIs. GSK’s patent for the technology expired in April 2022.
According to 3P Innovation, the new product fills up to 5 times faster than other commercially available systems and can handle difficult powders such as magnesium stearate and formulations with lubricants. Systems using the new technology can be built with containment for filling of powders that generate a lot of dust or for filling of highly potent powders, and the company said that it can install commercial lines over the next year for generic versions of Diskus or Ellipta products that are aiming for launches in 2029.
Bailey commented, “The expiry of the Diskus DPI patent will enable lower cost medications and an improved access to an increased number of therapeutic options. 3P innovation has now created an equivalent high-speed powder filling system which is far more cost-effective and faster than market alternatives. This represents a considerable commercial and growth opportunity for 3P innovation. This will also have considerable benefits for patients of respiratory conditions as well as for healthcare systems internationally.”
