DDL 2019 highlighted sustainability issues in the inhaled drug delivery industry

The Recipharm stand was located directly across the aisle from device maker Bespak, which it acquired recently along with Bespak’s parent company Consort Medical. In one corner of the exhibition hall, the Medicon Valley Inhalation Consortium, several of its member companies such as Emmace Consulting, AB Fia, and Galenica joined other Swedish companies, including Iconovo and Inhalation Sciences to create a substantial Swedish presence that they joked would require passport controls after Brexit.

Berry, which acquired device maker RPC Bramlage earlier this year, was acquainting delegates with the new name. The acquisition of another device maker, 3M Drug Delivery Systems, by a private investment company was announced on the second day of the meeting; that company will undoubtedly be acquainting delegates with a new name at a future meeting.

Merxin unveiled its MRX006 DPI at DDL 2019

As usual, a number of OINDP companies used DDL as an occasion to launch new products and services. Merxin celebrated its 4th anniversary with balloons, champagne, and donuts and promoted the launch of its new MRX006 multidose DPI device designed specifically for triple therapies. The MRX006 has dual cavities, which allow for separation of incompatible APIs in triple combination inhalers.

Other exhibitors with new products and services included Astech Projects, which highlighted a new Xelox automated NGI sample recovery system that can prepare and recover samples from 5 NGI cup trays in less than an hour. Oxford Lasers was promoting its new contract services spray testing facility in Didcot, UK, where the company will offer spray characterization for a wide range of aerosol drug delivery devices. New exhibitor Upperton Pharma Services informed delegates about its two-step particle manufacturing process for inhaled drugs that involves spray drying followed by micronization, which the company says allows for faster processing at larger scales.

Other companies exhibiting at DDL 2019 included Coalesce, H&T Presspart, Intertek Melbourn, Lonza (Capsugel), Nanoform, Nemera, and Proveris Scientific
