Highlights from RDD 2018

Nemera’s e-Advancia electronic nasal spray pump

Perlen’s Perlamed Blistair single use DPI

While several companies, including 3M, H&T Presspart, and Nemera showed off sophisticated connected devices, several other companies displayed inhalers on the other end of the spectrum: single use disposable DPIs such as Iconovo’s ICOone, which was recently the subject of a deal with the Japanese company TOA, and Perlen’s Perlamed Blistair, which is manufactured in a single step on a blister machine.

Coalesce launched its new MDI products, a breath-actuated device and a press-and-breathe device, both available for out-licensing. The launch marks the company’s transition from a contract designer and developer to a device company.

At the Emmace Consulting table, Bo Olsson gave face to face demonstrations of the company’s new modeling software, which he also described in the session on deposition modeling, in a talk titled, “Mimetikos Preludium: A New Pharma-friendly Aerosol Drug Deposition Calculator.”

At Lonza Pharma’s table, the company provided information on services featured in its well-received supplier seminar, “Expanding the Orally Inhaled and Nasal Drug Product (OINDP) Portfolio Through Particle Engineering” as well as its Capsugel line of DPI capsules.

Several companies promoted products and services outside of their usual offerings at the exhibition, including Sanofi subsidiary CEPiA, which in addition to spray drying and micronization services, was promoting its newly available fluticasone propionate product, and Oxford Lasers, which was offering contract services for analysis of device behavior for all types of OINDPs, including rapid screening of devices.

The next RDD conference will be RDD Asia in November 2018, followed by RDD Europe in Lisbon, Portugal in May 2019.
