Company files patent applications for novel intranasal delivery system

US-based AirWare Labs says that it has filed patent applications for an intranasal drug delivery system that will include “AirWare Labs’ patent-pending disposable sealed cartridge and patent-pending nasal insert system with insufflation plugins, both of which can be filled with medication in powder form.” The company currently markets a line of disposable nasal inserts, some infused with essential oils and some with filters, that it says improves airflow significantly greater than external nasal strips.

According to the company, the drug delivery system it is trying to patent can provide controlled release of powdered formulations or immediate delivery of the entire dose. In addition to conventional OTC and prescription applications, the company cites medical marijuana as a potential drug that might benefit from delivery using the device.

AirWare Labs CEO Jeffrey Rassás said, “We recognized a need in the market for an inexpensive nasal drug delivery device that can be easily and effectively used at home. With AirWare’s innovative new system, we’ll be able to work with the pharmaceutical industry to create a highly efficient alternative to some of the most widely used oral and nasal spray medications.”
