E-cigarette explodes in user’s mouth

According to news reports, a Florida man lost his teeth and part of his tongue when the battery in an e-cigarette exploded in his mouth on February 14. The explosion also started a fire in the man’s home. Officials said that they were unable to determine the manufacturer of the e-cigarette.

In October 2010, the US Court of Appeals ruled that the FDA has no authority to regulate e-cigarettes as drug/device combinations, and the FDA has said that it will not appeal the ruling. The agency’s website warns consumers about potential hazards of the formulation ingredients but makes no mention of danger from the devices themselves.

At least one YouTube video has been posted recently showing the remains of an e-cigarette after the battery exploded during charging (watch below).
